A love that is supernatural. A love that is beyond the earthly realm – which is the love of a father, of a mother, of a daughter, and of a mother-in-law.
Normally, a family can be tightly bound together by love. Even a family that is pitted against each other has a certain amount of love. In these verses of the scripture – Mathew 10:34-39 – God promises a love that is supernatural. Even though I sin, every time the Lord comes back to me and forgives me – even when the sin is so great and too ugly to bring up to the family. That is why, to me, scripture says,
Matthew 10:37–38 — English Standard Version (ESV)
37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
Verse 37 implicitly says to me that nothing but God’s love for me can release me into peace, forgiveness, and happiness. This love is everlasting through eternal life. The love of family can last throughout life until death but not through eternal life which means to infinity – a mathematical symbol that also means endless in time.
Verse 38 implicitly says to me that I have to take up my cross and follow Him, to receive this supernatural love. What does it mean to take up my cross? It is my suffering from mental illness. It is my burden to bear and even in this burden, I am to accept it and focus on God.
How do I do that? Suffering has so much pain, so many bad thoughts and lies swirling around inside of my head. To focus on God meant saying, “Jesus, I trust in You”, over and over again. To focus on God meant remembering others have it worse than me AND praying for them. To focus on God meant begging for forgiveness. To focus on God meant having my husband pray over me. To focus on God meant preventing harsh and unruly words from escaping from my mouth which were intended to hurt others. To focus on God meant knowing that Jesus is always the answer. By focusing on God, I was able to take up my cross and follow Him.
There are better days, I assure you, my readers! What are better days? You will know it when you live in God’s love.
